Nicholas Joseph Fury is a fictional character appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. He is a master strategist, tactician, and skilled combatant, initially depicted as a cigar-chomping sergeant leading the Howling Commandos during World War II.
Following the war, Fury became an agent of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and later the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. (Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division), a peacekeeping and intelligence organization. Through the use of the Infinity Formula, Fury has remained youthful despite his advanced age, granting him slowed aging and enhanced physical abilities.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Fury is portrayed by Samuel L. Jackson, reimagined as an African American character and the driving force behind the Avengers Initiative. He serves as a connective tissue between various Marvel heroes, recruiting and guiding them to protect Earth from global and cosmic threats.
